Gardening to Grow

The Gardening to Go Project is a climate and social justice initiative that empowers youth to take environmental action by planting herbs and/or flowers in eco-friendly pots and delivering them to seniors in the community. This project addresses both ecological sustainability and social equity by bridging generations, reducing social isolation, and fostering community resilience in the face of climate change and food insecurity.

Many seniors in our community live in apartments without backyards, limiting their access to green spaces and gardening opportunities. Additionally, many seniors live on fixed or limited incomes, which prevents them from purchasing eco-friendly pots, plants, and especially climate-friendly supplies. As part of the project’s climate and social justice focus, seniors will be provided with mini-gardens in eco-friendly pots that they can care for in their homes.

Even one small pot becomes a commitment to help to mitigate the negative impact of climate change (reducing our plastic foot print); while giving seniors access to the healing, cultural, and environmental benefits of gardening. Beyond the planting and delivery, youth will also collect and document stories from seniors about their gardening experiences.
